ESTATE FRESH!
Mid 1900's Vibroplex Telegraph Key with Original Carrying Case!
I have been collecting/dealing in Antiques and Collectibles for well over 45 years. Most of the treasures that I acquire are direct from estates or houses. Over the time that I have been been doing this I have ended up setting aside items that were either of specific interest to me or that I felt were especially "unique and eclectic". This has ended up with my having a rather extensive "personal" collection. I am now at a point in my life that I have to limit this addiction and in fact actually downsize my "collection(s)!" I suggest that you consider adding me to your list of sellers that you follow as I will be offering many "decommissioned" treasures as well as the extensive new acquisitions that I continue to pursue in my semi-retirement!
The development of the telegraph marked the beginnings of a revolution in communication. The new technology sent messages across wires with the help of a telegraph key. The design of the early telegraph keys caused considerable strain on the telegraphers wrist resulting n a condition that is now known as carpal tunnel syndrome! In 1902, inventor Horace G. Martin patented the first in the development of devices designed to alleviate this problem. The martin Autoplex was an electro mechanical sending device which required batteries for operation. Two years later Martin along with a group of entrepreneurs formed the United Electrical Manufacturing Company. In the same year, Martin filed a second patent for the design of a new device which used a weighted vibrating arm and did not require the use of a battery operated magnetic coil. This design was the basis for the Vibroplex telegraph keys. When the United Electrical Manufacturing Company went out of business in 1908, Martin teamed up with J.E. Albright for the manufacture of the telegraph keys. On March 12, 1915, Albright filed for the incorporation for The Vibroplex Company, Inc. Vibroplex represented the best of the telegraphic and later Amateur Radio Industries.
This is an original standard Vibroplex, first patented in 1904. It is designed for code speeds ranging from approximately 20 wpm upwards to 50+ wpm. Its serial number indicates manufacture in 1946. The key is in its original fitted carrying travel case approximately 9" x 4 3/8" x 4 1/2". The case includes the original key!
The telegraph key is in very good to excellent condition. Its fitted case does have some "lifting" of the leather covering
