Description
Offered for sale are 4 Civil War Era Scalpels as shown. These scalpels were purchased at an estate sale near Shepherdstown, WV as part of a box of kitchen implements. Shepherdstown is just South of Sharpsburg, MD, site of the Battle of Antietam, and is along the route General Lee's troops would have traveled in retreat from battle and into the Shenandoah Valley of Virginia. While we have no knowledg that these instruments were used at Antietam or who used them and when, the possible correlation we find interesting. The bone saw is 8" in length. There appers to be a manufacture's mark but it is corroded.
The straight scalpel is 6-1/2" in length. It is clearly marked KOLBE. There are also letters engraved on the edge of the handle which are worn and are difficut to read. These letters appear to be: MOHMM or NOHMM, or NOMMM or some variation thereof. We will leave this to the experts, which we are not.
The curved scalpel is 6-1/2" in length. There appears to be a manufacturer's mark, but it is corroded.
The short scalpel is 5" in length. There is a manufacturer's mark, but it is severely worn.
All 4 scalpels show varying signs of use, and are being sold together "As-Is."
