Today we are delighted to offer for sale a gorgeous antique French scenic ormolu box!
This precious and lovely piece is beautifully crafted and detailed. The box features a gilt ormolu rectangular frame with gently curved sides, done in the neoclassical Louis XVI style. The sides of the box feature a repousse design of classical acanthus leaves interspersed with a vitruvian scroll. The lid features a delicate roped border framing a bespoke cut glass cover. The piece-de-resistance of the box is its stunning lithograph cover, with features delicate and colorful pastel colors. It depicts French nobles of the Louis XVI period at leisure in a dreamy chateau garden. The lovely ladies and gallant gentleman, all in fine court dress, can be seen flirting and playing tric trac on a Louis XVI table with matching fauteuils. A large limestone statue of Venus and Cupid looms large above the players. On the upper parterre of the garden, accessed by a low staircase framed with neoclassical urns, two couples can be seen strolling the gardens with a large and elegant chateau in the background. The interior of the box is luxuriously upholstered with pretty French woven floral fabric. The piece will make a fine addition to any French ormolu box collection.
Box presents beautifully and is in very good antique condition, with minor display wear, tarnish and patina commensurate with age. The glass cover has minor edge roughness (from the cutting process) and a few light scuffs. The lithograph has minimal wear and toning. The fabric cover has minor wear, fading, and discoloration. Please review all photos before purchasing.
